Laboratorios Moreno - Sonidos del Bosque [Official Music Video]
2023. Fugaz Studios. Directed by Alejandro Espinosa.
Art Department Assistant, Production Assistant - Fernanda Oetling Santacruz
The official music video for Laboratorios Moreno’s single Sonidos del bosque [ft. La revolución de Emiliano Zapata]. Laboratorios Moreno is a celebrated indie Mexican rock band whose songs have an experimental and lightly psychedelic quality to them. This music video aimed to convey this aspect through the exploration of a “modern man” reconnecting with nature.
This was my first time collaborating with Fugaz Studios, a production house based in Guadalajara. I could not have asked for a better team! It helped me shake off the jitters of tapping into the professional industry. It was an enriching networking and work experience, wrapped in a wild shoot. Literally- we shot on location on top of a mountain in southern Jalisco!
I initially joined the production as an assistant to the art director and was kindly asked if I’d be interested in taking up additional responsibilities as a production assistant. During the first two days of shooting, my work revolved mostly around art and props: taking pictures of the sets to ensure continuity, helping set up green screens when necessary, moving props and set pieces as instructed by the director and camera team and, finally, helping to dismount sets and organize props once the scene wrapped.
After the first two days of production I was approached by the Producer and asked if I would agree to be a production assistant and take a leadership position in the second half of the shoot -the part that took place on a mountain peak. It was a little nerve-wracking, as I would be coordinating the catering aspects of the shoot and managing the camping grounds (base camp). The producer was patient and supportive throughout, allowing me to ask all manner of questions, occasionally making suggestions but also making it clear he trusted my judgment.
In the end, despite some set backs and not favorable climate conditions the crew and cast managed to pull through and get the excellent footage seen in the final product. Camping out in the woods with twenty people and a lot of film equipment was enough of a test for me to really realize that I love working on set!
What I Learned working on a professional production
No amount of planning will ensure that everything goes according to plan, much less when you factor in nature. However, spending the time in planning will definitely make problem solving easier and minimize negative consequences.
A positive attitude goes a long way.
Communication between departments is key. Even if you are working in one department offering to help someone else is 1) generous and 2)makes the rest of the production run a little smoother.
Trust your gut, but own up to your mistakes when necessary and find ways to correct them. Even in these situations it is okay to ask for help.
When working in nature, always pack two extra tarps. Even if it doesn’t rain, a waterproof material will always come in handy!
